I'm worthy to be human resource minister, says Riot

Human Resource Minister Richard Riot said today he is worthy of being appointed as a federal minister, which was the prerogative of Prime Minister Najib Razak, following calls by the opposition that he should be asked to resign for allegedly having fake university degrees.

Riot, who is also Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) deputy president, said the opposition's accusation was uncalled for especially as they had questioned the integrity and wisdom of the prime minister in appointing him as a minister in his new cabinet.

"As prime minister, he (Najib) has used his wisdom to find out whether I am fit to be a minister, and that includes my academic qualification, by tasking me to be in charge of the human resources porfolio, which is a very a challenging ministry with 13 agencies," he told reporters after launching the Pesta Birumuh 2013 and the state-level 1Malaysia Support For Housewives and Azam Kerja programme in Serian.

In rebuking the allegation, Riot, who is also Serian member of parliament (MP), said he would not hesitate to take legal action, if deemed necessary, against the three DAP MPs, Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming, Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari and Stampin MP Julian Tan for making the allegation, that had tarnished his image, outside parliament.

It was quoted by online reports that they had urged Najib to ask Riot and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Ewon Ebin to resign for having fake degrees if the prime minister was serious about his cabinet's integrity.

However, Riot had said he was in the human resources ministry because his first degree in Human Resource was from University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom while his Masters was also in the same field.

Tourism Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz says he hopes that Jonker Walk would remain closed to traffic on weekends after a four-week trial period where it is to be opened to traffic.

He said he had advised Chief Minister Idris Haron not to reopen it to traffic, because tourism is a major contributor to Malacca’s economy and Jonker Walk is one of its ‘must-see’ attractions.

“Even its name is ‘Jonker Walk’, meaning it is for pedestrians to walk on and not be limited to the sidewalks.

“The people must walk on the street. It is Jonker Walk, it is not Jonker Drive,” he said at a press conference today.

Hung Terengganu assembly unlikely, say politicians

Will a hung state assembly emerge in Terengganu with an upcoming by-election that has the possibility of splitting the 32-seat legislature down the middle?

Unlikely, according to feedback from politicians on both sides of the divide.

The death of Kuala Besut assemblyperson Dr A Rahman Mokhtar of the Barisan Nasional (BN) has forced a by-election in Terengganu where the ruling BN now has 16 of the 17 seats it won in the May 5 general election and Pakatan Rakyat has 15 (PAS 14 and PKR, one).

An opposition victory in the by-election, which has to be held before Aug 27, could split the seats 16-16.

It is generally believed that this hung state assembly could result in a fresh election being called, but politicians interviewed said this should not necessarily be so.

Terengganu MCA chief and former state executive councillor Toh Chin Yaw (right) told Bernama the casting vote by the speaker of the assembly, a post now held by Mohd Zubir Embong, would keep the BN in power in the state.

"The chair of any meeting has the casting vote. If voting is tied, under certain regulation, the chair (speaker) will exercise his casting vote," he said.

If the number of seats is tied at 16-16, the BN government would get that one majority from the speaker's casting vote.

PKR vice-president Tian Chua shared the opinion, saying that even if PAS managed to capture the Kuala Besut seat in the by-election and there was a tie at 16-16, a fresh election would not have to be called.

"Whether the speaker is an assemblyperson or not, the principle is that the chair has the casting vote when the situation is tied. The speaker will cast his vote and the BN will continue to rule," he told Bernama.

He said a change of government could only happen only if there were defections of assemblypersons from the ruling party.

Ku Nan: We don't need indelible ink

Malaysia does not need to have indelible ink as part of its electoral process because we are not a "third world country", Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said today.

Speaking to reporters outside of the Dewan Rakyat, Tengku Adnan (left) said that the indelible ink was only agreed upon in the Parliament because "the opposition wanted it."

"They wanted it, so Parliament agreed. But having too much of chemicals in the ink is not good for the health of the people," he said.

"In India, it lasts for one or two months, it is not healthy," he added.

Fancy Sucking Our Own Fingers After Voting???

Maybe the EC did not want to waste the unfinished and unused stocks of the "ink" and they have used the food color instead of indelible ink. The food color can be sold off later???? Ha ha ha .....

 

One thing the EC has forget is to tell the voters that instead of washing their fingers we should have sucked it. Ha ha ha

No chemicals, only food colouring in EC's ink

The Election Commission (EC) has said that there were "no chemicals" in its indelible ink that was used for the 13th general election.

In a parliamentary written answer to Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut) today, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassim said that all the chemicals in the ink were replaced by food colouring.

"No chemicals were used in the ink, they were instead replaced with food colouring ingredients which were approved," the short answer read to a question as to why the ink did not last seven days as initially promised.

"The durability of the ink is subject to the efforts taken to wipe off the ink by individuals," the reply said.

It also said that a test conducted on EC officials and media personnel on May 2 "proved" that the ink worked the way it was supposed to.

The EC has previously said that silver nitrate was used in the ink and was supposed to last seven days.

However, many individuals have complained of being able to easily wash off the indelible ink within hours of being applied.

Lim later laughed at the parliamentary reply in his Twitter account, noting that the indelible ink was now "edible" based on the reply.

One netizen who was bemused by the reply later tweeted in response, cheekily asking if the ink was "finger licking good".
Supplier’s identity secret for ‘security reasons’

Meanwhile in a separate reply to another DAP MP, Anthony Loke (DAP - Rasah), Shahidan (below) stated that the cost for the use of indelible ink during the May 5 polls was RM6.9million.

Reading out the answer prepared by the EC, the minister said the amount also covered the costs for designing special ink bottles, the brushes, the boxes as well as the cost for the unique ink mixture, seeing as how it was not available in the market.

“Other additional costs consist of transport cost, packaging and storage, about RM200,000, making the total costs RM7.1 million,” Shahidan said in the written reply.

He added that at this time, there is no plan to reveal information on the indelible ink supplier to the public for “security reasons”.
