EC: Priority now is to clean the electoral roll
KUALA LUMPUR: The Elections Commission's (EC) priority now is to clean the electoral roll, said EC deputy chairman Datuk Wira Wan Ahmad Wan Omar.
"In fact, we had a workshop the whole of last week to study the process and regulations governing the process as well as discuss the suggestions that have been brought up by the civil society.
"We will be proposing the new registration law to parliament before the next general election," he said at the Seventh Annual Malaysian Student Leaders Summit.
"We will be relying on reliable agencies such as the National Registration Department (NRD), Defence Ministry and police," he said on Sunday.
Wan Ahmad added that the EC would also be engaging with various NGOs to address the various issues and flaws of the current system.
Responding to Bersih Chairman Datuk S. Ambiga's demands for EC to clean the electoral roll before delineation exercise are done, Wan Ahmad said that the point was taken and the EC is coming up with a new registration law.
Wan Ahmad however, said that the EC could not put off their responsibility to continue with the exercise just because one group of people demanded it.
"Although the constitution only says that the exercise should be done every eight years without specifying the maximum years, we still have the responsibility to do it within the stipulated time," he said.
